Rhine river cruise

Photos from my day cruise on the Rhine river just west of Wiesbaden. The day begain with a tour of Berg Rhinestine (Rhinestein Castle) and ended with a wine tasting in the heart of Reisling wine country. Drawings will be coming shortly – as soon as I recover from the wine tasting.

Me, duh, at the Germania memorial (Niederwalddenkmal) constructed to commemorate the foundation of Germany after the end of Franco-Prussian War in 1871. Rhine river below. This photo was taken silghtly after 1871, as Don Ameche had not yet invented the camera (with repects to the Marx brothers).

Views of Berg Rhinestein – – – – – –

From the river

An interior garden with burgundy grapes on the trellices.

Another garden, looking north.

Castle view. The iron basket on the upper right was used to persuade riverboat tax collectors not to continue their occupation ( about a 300 foot drop) on their first offense. They were out in there for a frew days. One their second offecse they got the same view without the benefit of the basket.

When in Munich, …

Drink beer of course. Here I am doing the tourist-thing at Hofbräuhaus München during a day trip to Munich. The Hofbräuhaus is a happening, touristy, international place. Thank you to the Munich local sitting down the table for tips on what beer to order, and to the Russian couple across from me who snapped my photo.

Show at Visione

My opening at Visione was fantastic. Friends, co-workers, and friends of friends enjoyed art, champagne, great food, and wonderful company. We finally wrapped up about 11pm. I think everyone made it home without incident, except for one person, who shall remain anonymous, who received a parking ticket!  🙂

To see the virtual show, click the Exhibition link on the right.

The owner wants me to put up more work – it’s being printed as I write this and I’ll put it up as soon as I get it (probably about 10 days or so depending on mail speed). I am also printing a limited set of postcards with the Ramstein Village image on them. Send me an email if you you want one and are out of the area.

Exhibition for a cause

I am really pleased to have an exhibition at Visione restaurant because I support their mission (I also like their food and that they support local artists and musicians). Read more about them below, and please visit them if you are in the area.

Café – Bistro – Restaurant Visione has two locations – The one in Kaiserslautern is located in the heart of the old town. Aside from a stylish ambience, friendly atmosphere, and delicious food, Visione is an important contribution to the social model of the city of Kaiserslautern with their “to live together – learn together” project. It was the first barrier-free (handicap accessible) restaurant in Kaiserslautern and its on-going mission is to hire mentally and physically challenged individuals and to prepare them for permanent employment on the open labor market. Their motto: “alles ausser gewöhnlich”, “everything except ordinary.”

At Visione you will find a varied lunch menu, homemade cakes and tea and coffee specialties. In the evening a selection of Mediterranean and regional dishes are freshly prepared and continuously a comfortable meeting place in our bistro and lounge area.

Opening times:
Monday to Saturday, 11:30 – 24:00
Closed on Sundays.

I spent an early Christmas in heaven

I spent a whole day there, gorging on bratwurst and main-lining Glühwein. Heaven?  Close — the Christmas Markets in Cologne. I was there with 847,352 of my closest friends. No kidding. At one point there were so many people pushing against me that if I had hopped up into the air 1 or 2 inches, I would have been carried along by the mass of bodies. Yes, there was lots of shopping to be done, but alas, there were sooo many types of bratwurst and other barbecued meats, all washed down with more Glühwein, that my shopping had to wait. And Glühwein without an added shot of amaretto is like hot chocolate without the hot.

After a morning tour of old-town Cologne, I spent the better part of the afternoon taking in the sights as I moved between bratwurst and Glühwein vendors. So, how many brats can one eat and amaretto-laced Glühwein can one drink?  I am not sure. I was still working on that when it was time to board the bus for the two-hour trip home. I don’t remember the trip home. I lost consciousness shortly after I slid into my seat. (I had an unexpected day off, so I went to Cologne on a USO tour).

This photo shows a less crowded part of the market. 🙂
